Baby Acne: Is It Normal?

Baby acne (also called neonatal acne) is a common concern for new parents who may not be entirely sure what is wrong with their baby. This acne generally appears as little red bumps, not like a rash, all over your baby’s cheeks. It does not have to remain on the cheeks however. It is also often present all over his or her face. While your baby may have been born with infant acne, most children do not develop it until they are a few weeks to three or four months of age.

You do not want to resort to adult acne remedies as a solution, because these types of treatments will be much too harsh for your baby’s sensitive skin. The best cure for baby acne is time, it does usually go away all on it’s own, but in the meantime, you should still cleanse your baby’s face daily-once a day with water and some gentle baby soap is enough.

Another thing to consider if your baby has a “baby acne rash” is the way you wash the child’s clothes. You may want to switch to the mildest detergent available. When your child’s skin is irritated from acne, it can be much more sensitive to detergents and other types of soaps.

The good news is that we have found that if you wait it out, baby acne typically goes away on its own, so the majority of baby acne remedies are not needed. Baby acne is often just a phase that your baby’s skin is going through. Do not be overly concerned about it unless you see that the inflammation is getting significantly worse and your child’s face looks to be infected. If it does not go away after some time, we would recommend that you bring your baby to a pediatrician or dermatologist. Your doctor may prescribe the best acne medications for your child.
