Power Chair or Mobility Scooter?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

People who lack mobility may experience many exasperating situations, including the inability to move about their own homes or the outside world at will. This can be very frustrating, obviously, and if you’re in this situation, you should know that you have options. There are several different options available today, and the one that you choose will depend on your needs and preferences. One of the major choices that you’ll have to make, though, is whether you need a power chair or a mobility scooter.

A power chair is more useful for people who want to move around their own homes more easily. These chairs can make super-sharp turns, and they have a compact design that allows them to fit into even the smaller rooms of your home. If you have severe mobility issues and cannot even get from your bedroom to your kitchen with ease, you may want to look into getting a power chair to use around your home.

A mobility scooter, on the other hand, will offer you mobility outside the home. Because it’s designed with handlebars and a longer frame, a mobility scooter probably won’t fit easily inside your home. Besides this, a mobility scooter can’t make the same sharp turns that a power chair can make, which means that it may be difficult to maneuver in small, inside spaces.

A mobility scooter, though, can offer you a way to reconnect with the outside world. Its sturdier construction will withstand sidewalk riding, and you can use one of these tools to get around your neighborhood so that you can walk the dog or visit with neighbors more easily. If you can get to your favorite stores with ease, you can even use a mobility scooter for shopping. Though it won’t fit in super-small spaces, it will definitely fit the wide aisles of a grocery store with ease.
